Eating together, because it’s more than just a meal
When it’s time to eat, we all sit together with the children - just as you might do at home, as a family. For us, mealtimes are about more than nutritious food (although that is incredibly important). They are a time to swap stories, strengthen bonds, and deepen relationships - to feed your child emotionally as well as physically.
At Little Fellows Day Nursery, we understand the importance of a healthy, balanced diet for young children. Not only do we promise to meet your child’s nutritional requirements we also strive to encourage good food habits. Children learn which part of the world the food originated from (as we promote diversity too in our meals) We are working towards Healthy London Early Years Award.
We are passionate about nursery mealtimes at our settings, so we enlisted the help of a nutritionist to devise weekly menus. Our aim is to provide fresh, balanced meals to all children at each meal or snack time.
Mealtimes are also a learning experience, from the fine motor development of using knives and forks, to awareness of good manners and politeness. Nursery mealtimes are fun for all and a great opportunity for nursery practitioners to bond with your child. They are sociable learning opportunities, where we teach children about good manners, different foods and how to feed themselves independently.
Fresh fruits, fresh water is available to the children at all times. Milk is provided throughout the day.
All children are offered at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. All allergies and dietary requirements are catered for. The nursery caters for special dietary requirements and also promotes free choice, encouraging the children to experience a diverse range of tastes and flavours. During meal times, children are told which part of the world the meal of the day originates from. We use every opportunity to teach.
If you are in search of any advice regarding pediatric nutrition, we recommend the website Nutritionist Resource, where you can access some great information, resources and expert knowledge on a range of topics and events.
Our kitchen is inspected by Environmental Health Officers employed by Barnet council who decide a score based on a star rating from 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest. Inspections take place between every six months to two years depending on the nature of the business. On our very first inspection we got the 5 star rating.
We are extremely lucky to have our own in-house chef. She cooks healthy and nutritionally balanced meals using fresh vegetables and the best quality meat and fish. All meals are cooked fresh daily and are locally sourced.
Nursery menus are available at the nursery for parents to view at the start of each week. and also emailed to parents via Blossom.
